Ideal present for yourself or anyone interested in social history or gaining an insight into life in Bomber Command during WW2. Signed by the author who is very happy to add your own personal message to his signature.
From Kenneth Ballantyne, author of the best selling "Another Dawn Another Dusk" comes this fascinating, revealing and powerful biography of well-known WW2 RAF Bomber Command veteran, Reg Payne. Reg was wireless operator in the remarkable Lancaster crew of Flt Lt Michael Beetham, later to become Sir Michael Beetham, Marshal of the Royal Air Force.
Reg's childhood years in Kettering before the war give a wonderful insight into a world unrecogniseable today. After a year in the Home Guard, he followed his brother Arthur into the RAF and joined the Beetham crew; one that would face all the terrors of the night skies over Germany.
The Battle of Berlin during the winter of 1943/44, saw the crew's thirty operations include ten trips to the German capital and to Nuremberg on the disastrous night of 30th/31st March 1944. This veteran crew only just survived the dangers that awaited them. Fighter attacks, searchlights, anti-aircraft fire, fuel shortages, engine failure over the target, a bomb through their wing, and baling out of a blazing Lancaster were just some of their challenges.
