Royal Navy Torpedo Boat Destroyer plans included “
These TBD's were clearly the smallest vessels able to carry the required armament at the desired speed. Using a scale of 1:144, this model is about 18 inches (45cm) long. & 1.7 inches (43mm), beam.
Designer’s Note
A stand-off scale model based on the TBD's built during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries for the Royal Navy. Built to an approximate scale of 1:144 it can carry R/C gear despite being under 18 inches (45cm) long. Construction is mainly from balsawood and overall weight is approx. 12 ounces (350gm).
‘My first working model boats were based upon Royal Navy destroyers mainly because they locked dashing, they also could be conveniently built using the standard sizes of balsawood sheet. This produced a model of something perhaps like a WW2 destroyer with a length around 30 inches (75om to a scale of approximately 1:144 or 1 inch =12 feet in imperial measurements). This proved to be a happy combination, since the dry cells used to power the small electric motors. Available of that time could run these models quite realistically this scale also matched my abilities in detailing the models, to give the characteristic look without vulnerable delicate details which would never have lasted long during sailing action at the pond.
Over the years I've built a series of warship models to the scale, but nothing bigger than cruiser or an aircraft carrier. The idea come try something from an earlier period and after some thought, a model based on the Torpedo Boat Destroyers (TBD's for short) had most appeal. Their modest size would be problem and to make it more difficult, sub-miniature radio control (borrowed from the micro-aircraft world and one by those converting small plastic boat kits into radio controlled models) was NOT going to be used. The plan was to employ standard although as small as possible commercial items and make a practical working model as there is nothing like change to keep the grey cells active!’ Glynn Guest, Designer.
