ANTIQUE COPPER JARDINIERE

A fine quality and eye-catching antique late Victorian hexagonal copper jardiniere by Joseph Sankey & Sons of Bilston, Wolverhampton. Beautifully and skilfully crafted with neatly joined bulbous panels with each rim section riveted to the adjacent one.  Each panel has a nicely engraved crested, shield-shaped cartouche, enclosed by a wreath of stiff-leaf foliate pattern. The underside is stamped with the maker's mark and the registered design number: Rd. 37387 which dates the design to 1886. In fine condition, this planter has a distinct 'country house' quality feel and appearance. 

Date: during or shortly after 1886

Condition. Fine functional condition (exceptional in my opinion). Lightly and sympathetically cleaned by hand externally leaving just a little tarnish in the joins and crevices. The planter is in unusually good shape for a copper piece and only has a couple of tiny pinprick dings. The underside has been painted in red oxide, this looks to be a historic alteration, possibly to help protect against corrosion.
