Fairing is the name given to pieces of inexpensive china that could be won or bought at Victorian country fairs and are now widely collected as authentic folk art. The fairs of Victorian England were major events where entire communities would take a day out, they consisted of entertainments, sideshows, food and drink, but more importantly they were essentially commercial gatherings for the purchase of livestock and domestic wares. The fairs evolved over time to become the fun-fairs we know today.
This charming figure is modelled as a cherubic young girl dressed in best coat and hat with her books, all beautifully hand-painted. There are small holes close to her eyes from where there was once a pair of reading glasses. The spectacles would have been simply made from twisted/bent wire. Her clothes are in powder and royal blue, her hat is in blue tones with a white bonnet back and a white and gold bow. She is wearing blue boots. The girl is carrying books and a bag. There is lots of bright crisp gilding throughout. She has the most delightful face. There are no maker marks only a number 37.
It is in good order without chips and cracks, only missing her glasses. Please study the photos.
The fairing is being offered in good antique condition. It measures approx. 18cm tall.
A delightful collectable piece.
