Here on offer is a pretty antique Victorian blackware or Jackfield pitcher, dated 1890.
Jackfield is the common name for a class of earthenware decorated with a glossy black glaze, often taking design inspiration from Japanese lacquer wares. Traditionally this pottery was made at Jackfield, near Coalport in Staffordshire. Although recent research and excavations suggest that production was more widespread in England between 1837 and 1901. Other names given to such pieces is blackware, japanned ware and Victorian jet ware, among others.
This stunning little earthenware jug has a thick black glaze with a beautiful enamel and gilt bramble design. The jug has a beautifully moulded shape with gilt accents with two shaped cameos containing skillfully painted brambles against a green ground with beautiful colouring and gilt detail. There is no maker mark. The jug has some wear to the gilt and enamel and small surface marks.
The pitcher is offered in good antique condition, it measures about 19cm in height and is about 14cm at its widest point and weighs 547g.
A beautiful collectable piece.
