LADY'S SLIPPER TEA CUP AND SAUCER

Lady’s Slipper orchids are in the genus  Cypripedium  in the Orchidaceae family. The genus name  Cypripedium  is derived from the Greek words "Cypris" an early reference in Greek myth to Aphrodite, and “pedilon” for sandal. This is because the fused petals that form the orchid’s pouch or modified lip (labellum) resemble a slipper or shoe. The staminode (sterile stamen) is often showy and seems to welcome the insect into the pouch where it makes its way to a back door exit and in so doing transfers pollen to the stigma.    Wild lady’s slippers have special requirements that make them difficult to cultivate, and rarely survive transplanting from the wild.    Because of that, on federal lands in the US, it is illegal to dig or pick these orchids.

Teacup and Saucer

This teacup and saucer set – Lady’s Slipper – is part of a series that showcases the official provincial flowers of Canada.   The Lady's Slipper (Cypripedium) orchid was made the official flower of Prince Edward Island on April 25, 1947.   It gets its name from the shape of its petals which look like a slipper.    It blooms in late May and June and grows in shady woodlands.   The footed teacup and saucer are fluted and trimmed in gold.   Each displays a large and small flower, and a bud.

SUMMARY

Wood & Sons was an earthenware manufacturer (1865-2005) at the Trent, New Wharf Potteries and later the Stanley Pottery, Burslem (one of the towns which is part of the city of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire) England.

DETAIL

Established in 1865 by Absalom Wood and his son Thomas Francis Wood.   Sons is a familial reference to a prior generation of three Wood brothers Moses, Aaron, and Ralph.    Thomas was the fifth generation in line to Moses Wood.   Thomas, a prominent citizen in the potteries and later to become the Mayor of Burslem, built Wood and Sons into one of the largest companies in the area.   In 1921 Harry F. Wood succeeded his father, Thomas F. Wood, as the chairman and under his leadership the company became a prolific and successful pottery manufacturer.   The business became a public company in 1954 under the name Wood & Sons (Holdings) Ltd - although Wood and Sons Ltd continued as the main operating company.    Just over half of the shares were owned by the family and a large proportion of the remaining shares were held by employees, so few shares were available to the public.   In the 1950s and 60s the company was employing 1,000 people.   During the 1970s the company had to fight two unsuccessful takeover bids from local companies, the first in 1975 by a small family company called Barrets and in 1979 by Staffordshire Pottery. The unfortunate effect of fighting these unsuccessful takeover bids was to weaken the company and by 1981 the company’s financial position had deteriorated to such an extent that it was found impossible to continue, the bank took control of the business and by 1982 it was necessary to call in the receivers.   The business was purchased by Edmund Yorke, who had been the company secretary in the old Woods company for many years, he was joined by his nephew Norman Edmund Yorke who had been the accountant at Wood and Sons.    Production of tableware continued in the Stanley Works, Newport Lane, Burslem with the name of Wood and Sons living on, but no longer under the control of the Woods family, until 2005 when they finally closed.
