THIS AUCTION IS FOR A FINE ANTIQUE EDWARDIAN DARK OAK WOODEN PICTURE FRAME with CONSIDERABLE CLASS & CHARM, as you can see from the frame verso, it's very old. It has it's original glass and gilt slip.
This is the most wonderful original antique picture frame, very often copied in modern examples however this is the real thing.
So what I've done with this frame is strip it down to it's basics, remove and clean the glass, wax the wood and then replace everything as it should be. What this basically means is that you don't have to worry about getting glass. Simply remove the pins in the back with some pliers which I have highlighted with an arrow, take out the slip sight and insert your preferred image, then put back the pins with a small hammer (rest the frame on a folded towel before doing this). I tend not to send out many frames with glass as the Royal Mail don't cover any breakages, but I'm pleased to say that because we always pack our frames properly we haven't any problems/damages with the postal service recently, it's also much better to have the original antique glass than a new replacement don't you think.
It's got a great Dark Oak grain & patina and comes with it's original gilt slip. Has this fantastic carfed broder with an u usual twisting rope Arts & Crafts motif, really pleasing on the eyes and also quite smooth and tectile, it doesn't shout out at you but rather exudes a serene elegance, so understated.
It is very of it's time & has a great Arts & Crafts feel to it, minimal, not showy, a very much handcrafted 'Fin-de-Siecle' piece.
Okay, it isn't the most ornate frame I have ever sold but doesn't this just go IN it's favour, it certainly has age & quality. It has an amazing dark OAK patina, so tactile. I would put this to the Edwardian period, 1900/1910, thereabouts.
It currently contains an image of a cute Victorian baby, nice enough in it's own way but this frame is ready to take your image be it a quality painting Or an image of a loved one, a sumptious stylistic totally original design, so refined in appearance, superbly made.
It is a good solid construction, made in a manner that you just don't see in a modern reproduction frame, and in great condition, amazing when you consider this frame is over 100 years old.
There is something just very cool & very sophisticated about this frame, it doesn't shout out to be noticed so it will work very well with a quality picture, perhaps a 19th century watercolour. Would work equally well with a portrait of a loved one..
CONDITION.
The condition for its age is just Excellent, age commensurate wear, absolutely no damages, ever so slight widening of the joints due to variations in temperature over the many years but no movement, still super solid, just what you would expect to see in an old wooden frame, excellent used condition. It's quite simply in fantastic shape for its age & is fit for another 100 years.
This frame is on the large side & measures 25.25" by 21.25", the inner rebate measurement (for your image) is 20" by 16".
It can be used either Landscape or Portrait depending on your image, this frame would really do justice to a quality picture.
A really top quality frame, I am currently selling other frames similar to this one. Placed together together a few antique frames can create a really effective 'Interiors' look, check out any of the glossy style mags, from Elle Decoration to Country Living to A.D. (Spanish edition preferably) they all include images of walls covered in funky frames, it's an easy to achieve design look & very effective.
A stunning understated Oak frame that will enhance any room be it period or contemporary..
Any questions please ask & good luck! ;-)

The following taken from a top interiors magazine...
The fullest enjoyment of a picture depends upon the quality of it's presentation. The importance of framing is today much more widely recognised. By the appropriate use of an antique frame we can truly share & enjoy displaying a painting to it's greatest advantage. This is a proven principle adopted in private & public collections the world over.
In choosing an antique frame for your image you are showing sound aesthetic judgement. Many of my frames are bought by galleries & museums the world over.
In contemplating an old painting, very often the frame is taken for granted and most of us may be unaware of just how powerfully a good frame can influence our perception & enjoyment of the picture within. The marriage of picture & frame should be harmonious & enhancing to give you the viewer maximum visual impact, why settle for anything less..
