This Auction is for a pair of Hand Carved semi-translucent Soapstone bookends Purchased in Japan after WWII in the 1940's by my parent when they visited there. They are ornate skillfully carved and beautiful shade of orange-yellow gold. MEASUREMENTS - 4.5 (4 1/2) inches H x 1.5 (1 1/2) " (at the bottom) to 1" 125 (1 1/8) inches at the top so placed together back to back they almost make a slightly curved "A" Shape, which balances the weight, and supports books well. WEIGHT: 2 lbs 15.4 oz. The intricate and Elegant Carving makes a sort of honeycomb where light passes through. The intricately carve details of the vines and fruit (grapes?) make the sandstone seem lighter somehow. The fruit is polished to give off a slight glow. I wish the photos did them justice! DAMAGE - soapstone is a very soft stone which you can scratch with a fingernail. Soapstone, therefore, is susceptible to little nicks and scratches and these have their fair share. See photos 7-10 for the most obvious dings and flaws. Some of this could polish out, some not, but I have not attempted it, as I really don't want to make the situation any worse. These little imperfections and tiny dents and scratches do not lessen the beauty of these bookends, and it is the nature of the stone. Please ask any and all questions before bidding.
