Antique Flagon – J Skeate CIVET CAT, 14 High Street, Kensington, London c1855

SELLER OF LADYBIRD BOOKS & COLLECTIBLES SINCE 2004

This Lovely Stoneware Flagon is from the Civet Cat Public House which was situated on the High Street in Kensington.  I believe this Flagon probably dates from 1826 to 1855 when the pub address was 14 High Street.   From 1856 the address was 14 Kensington High Street.

I not able to find a Victualer by the name of J Skeate at this address.   In the 1811 Business Directory there was a Builder J R Skeate living in Salisbury, possibly he did some building work/or has a connection with the Civet Cat.   The Civet Cat was later situated at 74 Kensington High Street. This pub closed in the 1915 and is now in retail use. Two 'Ye Civet Cat' signs can still be seen on the Kensington Church Street and Kensington High Street facades.

Civet was an indispensable ingredient for early modern perfumery. This yellow, musky-smelling liquid from the perineal glands of carnivorous civet animals ( Viverra civetta ) was used in a bewildering range of recipes. It was almost always diluted with other animal or floral ingredients. For London perfumers, the ingredient was so central to their trade that they familiarized the capital’s inhabitants and visitors with the creature that produced it, advertising the image of the civet animal on trade cards and shops signs.  The advertising ensured that the civet’s image became and long remained synonymous with the perfumer. In the semiotic context of the city, the diminutive animal both signified the availability of perfume and evoked the exotic and erotic.

This Flagon does have a plethora of dents, gouges, nibbles and scratches, it is still in one piece and a lovely item of history regarding early modern perfumery.

Stands proud at approx. 32cm, measurement is approximate only.
