This is a beautiful antique Nippon handpainted small serving bowl or dish with handles. It so nice with blue flowers, pink roses, a gold design that looks like a gold plant between the flowers, connected with gold leaves and scrollwork. All this on the white porcelain with a top and bottom light green edge. It would display so nicely in a cabinet, or on a table and it would be pretty to use to serve cookies or biscotti or treats, when serving coffee or tea with a friend! That would be something to talk about…by the way, this bowl is over 100 years old…

The round part of the bowl is almost 7 inches in diameter, with handles on two sides that measure about 7 & 3/4 inches across. It weighs about 9 ounces and stands about 1 and 1/4 inches tall.

The porcelain itself is fine and thin, with a glaze that is very shiny. I see minimal marks on the glaze, even when I hold it at an angle to the light. And you can see how shiny the glaze still is in the video. There is some wear to the gold over time, especially on the handles and the edges that can be seen in the pictures. There are no cracks, chips, stains, or crazing. Really a lovely bowl, especially when realizing how old it is! Someone loved, and took care of this piece over the years, for sure.

The back stamp is in green and shows an M, inside a wreath, the words HANDPAINTED over the wreath, and NIPPON under the wreath. The M stands for Morimura, the brothers who started the import business to the US in the late 1800’s. The word NIPPON, shows it was made sometime from the 1890’s up until 1921. NIPPON is the Japanese word for Japan and starting in 1921 the US required the country of manufacture to be printed in English, so this piece was made prior to 1921. The company began by the Morimura brothers did eventually become the company, NORITAKE.
