Johnny Unitas was Ranked by Sporting News in 2004 as the #1 Quarterback of ALL TIME!
John Constantine Unitas
Position: QB
Height: 6-1 Weight: 194 lbs.
Born: May 7, 1933 in Pittsburgh, PA - September 11, 2002 passed away from a heart attack
College: Louisville (school history) - His jersey was retired at Louisville, the only player to EVER have their jersey retired and earn such high honors.
Drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 9th round (102nd overall) of the 1955 NFL Draft.
Unitas was a 10-time Pro Bowler & 5-time First-Team All-Pro, an innovator of the quarterback position and the game of football! One of the best know players in all of sports!
Inducted into Hall of Fame in 1979
Unitas was the NFL MVP in 1959, 1964 & 1967
Towards the end of his career, the "Golden Arm", had been used and abused so vastly that he couldn't make a fist.
From Sports Illustrated - "For years he was the toughest and smartest quarterback in the game. Calling the plays and running the show in a way that inspired both fear and aww among teammates and opponents alike. Mentally, he was always 2 steps ahead of everybody else, he perfected the 2 minute drill, no one since, not Montana, Elway, not anybody has ever been "able to nearly match the abilities of The Golden Arm, Johnny Unitas!"
Although, he never won a Superbowl he was involved in the greatest game ever played, 1958, the NFL Championship, the NFL's 1st ever overtime game. Still to this day he holds one of the most impressive records being that he threw a touchdown pass in 47 consecutive games, something that has not ever even been close to being duplicated! One of the few quarterbacks to have not have won a super bowl that is in the Hall of Fame. (The NFL Championship at the time was what we now call the "Superbowl" but the first Superbowl was not until 1966)
Unitas was cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1956, at that time he was working weekday as a construction worker, in 1957 he was #1 in yardage and led the Colts to the best record in franchise history at the time.
One night, In the middle of the night in 1984, Bob Irsay (The Owner of the Baltimore Colts at the time) packed up all of their equipment and moved Indianapolis, after the move Unitas cut ties with the franchise, asked for his Colt's related memorabilia to be removed from the Hall of Fame and has asked numerous times unless it was listed under the Baltimore Colts, he is not fond of the Indianapolis Colts needless to say. With this being said and Unitas dislike of the new Colts, I am assuming this helmet had to have been signed prior to the move, it would be very rare to find Unitas memorabilia after this time.
This item is not your everyday run of the mill item, this is an authentic, genuine, Baltimore Colts Football helmet signed by the one and only Johnny Unitas.
Please be sure to ask any questions prior to bidding, all sales are final unless the item is not as described upon receipt. You can contact me at any time and I normally will respond within minutes. Check my feedback!
