Vintage limited edition lithograph on paper by Dorothy Lake Gregory (Cape Cod/Provincetown, Massachusetts, 1892-1960).

Shows a charming street view of the House of the Seven Gables, a colonial era mansion located in Salem, Massachusetts that was built in 1688. It was made famous for the 1851 gothic novel “The House of the Seven Gables” by Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Pencil signature in the lower right corner, limited edition of 20. Pencil titled in the lower left corner.

The plate image measures 8.25x 9 inches, and 10x 11 inches with the margins. This print is not matted or framed.

Appears to be in overall good condition: the paper is naturally toned but does have mat burn in the margins. Edges have some wear, has tape strips on the top front margin corners and along the back top edge. Margins are slightly uneven. Small white streak along the male figure. Please refer to the photos. This print is not matted or framed and will be shipped securely in a flat cardboard envelope. All of the condition notes mentioned will be much less noticeable or unnoticeable with the right mat and frame.

This is a beautiful vintage lithograph by a well listed Massachusetts artist and has a fascinating historical landmark as its subject. It will make a fine addition to any art collection.

About Dorothy Lake Gregory:

Dorothy Lake Gregory (1893 1970)

Dorothy Lake Gregory was born in Brooklyn, NY and showed artistic talent early in life. As a teenager, she was already doing professional line drawings of children for a local newspaper. At age 17, she and her brother were taken by their father to Europe to be exposed to classic art and music.

After her return, she enrolled at the Pratt Institute in New York and studied at the Art Student League with Robert Henri. It was there that she would meet her future husband, Ross Moffett.

At the urging of a fellow student, Gregory went to Provincetown in 1914 to study with Charles Hawthorne. It was there that her relationship with Moffett developed; their marriage lasted for almost 51 years.

Her art expressed a tremendous range of styles and mediums. In spite of her success as an illustrator (she did over 20 books and many magazines), she readily sacrificed her own career to care for her family and promote the artwork of her husband.

Gregory exhibited at many prestigious places, including the National Academy of Design, the Museum of Modern Art and the Art Institute of Chicago and won many awards and prizes. Her work can be found in the permanent collections of the Boston Museum of Fine Art and the Congressional Library in Washington , DC
