Prototype History The Brownhoist company established itself as one of the leading makers of railroad wrecking cranes with the introduction of the world's first steam powered 20 ton crane in 1883.The model chosen as the prototype for this kit is typical of the 120 ton version introduced in 1909. This crane was very well received, with almost all American railroads owning at least several. Many of these cranes are still in operation, often steam or converted to diesel electric. This kit represents a "factory version". Many modifications and variations were developed by the various owners to suit their needs and specifications. Appliances such as headlights, generators, ladders, platforms, handrails, worklights, and curtains were added, as shown by the photos. This offers you many opportunities for superdetailing using many common locomotive parts you may have in you spares box. There were several boom styles offered and we have chosen the "heavier" version. The crane always traveled with a crane tender or "boom car". (See our Boom Car kit) Reaching under the boom, as an idler car, it also carried the many chains, cable, timbers and auxiliary attachments, as well as extra fuel and water supplies.
Notes: Photos show a typically assembled model produced in the workshops of our 'Blue Mountains Shale Oil and Saw Milling Company'. The yellow skip and boom is not included in the crane kit, A separate Boom Car kit is available which includes a selection of booms, hooks & slings (kit #4022). Coupling pockets are designed for KD#5s or similar - couplings not included. To keep our prices as low as possible, this item will be shipped direct from the US factory. Factory will be notified of your order within three working days of your payment with dispatch soon after. If you have purchased this kit from outside the US, please allow an additional 14-21 days for international delivery.
