This is a very good and RARE antique Georgian BOX CASKET, which I believe is a sewing box as there are two velvet pin cushions on the top, but it has a mirror inside too, so it could have been a trinket or patch box too !
A delicate thing..... it's made of cardboard and paper, that's been made durable and hard wearing due to the glass panels, which have been painted to mimmick agate.
The box also has embossed paper made to look like gilded brass! this is such a fabulous antique box! Very well made and has lasted all these years! ....normally items like this would have been thrown out or destroyed years ago...which makes this a RARE box today....when did you last see one of these ?
It has a metal handle on the top and a flip hook clasp and can be carried around easily.
Inside there has once been ribbon, to stop the lid falling backwards, but this has degraded over the years thus the lid does fall backwards and the 'hinge' area is wider than originally made and could break if not prevented from doing so.
It measures 5. 1/2 inches x 3 inches x 2. 1/2 inches.
It is in GOOD condition, it has been kept very well after approx 180 years! It does have age wear, the ribbons as already mentioned, the hinge area, but the only actual damage to this rare little box is one end pane of glass was broken very recently and the pieces are held within the box so hopefully the pane could be fixed.
A VERY rare Georgian period French CASKET BOX, you won't see many of these around nowadays due to the fragility of the make... this one is GOOD, and not to be missed!
Please see close up pictures for more detail.
The item(s) are shown next to an English 1 penny which is 20mm dia for scale.
Conversion ... approx... 2.5cm = 25mm = 1 inch
