This is a top quality solid pine frame, the kind you see in a Museum or Art gallery, or you could see in a Stately Home. Often I find it hard to get across in words in the description the correct terminology or a particular merit in an antique frame and so this makes the images in the listing very important. I have therefore used plenty of pics via the Auctiva host portal to give you the best possible impression of this beautiful item, please do view ALL of the pics to get as good a feel as possible for the stunning quality of this item, thank you. *It is one of a Pair of identical antique frames I currently have on ebay..This auction is for one frame only...
A fine thickset Victorian frame, heavy pine carcass, it's the type of frame that would really suit a Portrait or quality Art work. Often given the age you see lots of damage to the gesso but in this case the condition is excellent, which is amazing considering it's well over 100 years old. It is incredibly well made with a fantastic repeating foliate pattern to the inner border or frieze, a beautiful Classical motif. It also has this wonderful ornate foliate Acanthus 'Rope' style edging to the border and superb gesso 'Lambs Tongue' sight, the balance in the design is quite superb. I don't get frames as good as this one too often in such great condition and certainly not in pairs, both mounts are very high quality.
Measuring approximately 18" by 16", with an aperture/rebate size of 11.5" by 9.5", it is also quite a thick chunky frame with a depth of 2.5", 3.5" wide, rising to 5" wide in the corners. I think this frame would really suit a pair of portraits perhaps side by side over a fireplace. Each frame comes with two handy sturdy hanging rings to rear.
Verso you can see lots of signs of age and also signs of quality carpentry construction the likes of which simply isn't evident in today's modern frame counterparts, this frame would not look out of place in the most Stateliest of homes.
Condition, for a frame around 100 to 150 years of age the condition in my opinion is excellent. I guess it may have been touched up slightly over the many years and perhaps has been regilded here and there but then you find this in most antique frames, but having said that there are no large pieces of missing gesso which is amazing, the colour is good, everything is just as it should be. The Acanthus rope edging is particularly thick and majestic, there are a series of cracks where each piece has been fitted in segments all those years ago, these cracks show great signs of age and authenticity, many will have been caused over the years due to variations in temperatures, all is solid, there is no looseness to the corner joints and no signs of any worm. Built from a solid pine carcass.
If you have a serious work of art which requires an equally fitting serious frame OR a nice Portrait then you will not find too many more grandiose suitable or awe-inspiring mounts than this one. It has no doubt in the past had in it a museum quality work of art. Please take a good look at ALL of the images to get a good feel as to the high quality of this frame.
What you see here is a truly stunning example of an antique English frame that will grace any interior.

The fullest enjoyment of a picture depends upon the quality of it's presentation. The importance of framing is today much more widely recognised. By the appropriate use of an antique frame we can truly share & enjoy displaying a painting to it's greatest advantage. This is a proven principle adopted in private & public collections the world over.
In choosing an antique frame for your image you are showing sound aesthetic judgement. Many of my frames are bought by galleries & museums the world over.
In contemplating an old painting, very often the frame is taken for granted and most of us may be unaware of just how powerfully a good frame can influence our perception & enjoyment of the picture within. The marriage of picture & frame should be harmonious & enhancing to give you the viewer maximum visual impact, why settle for anything less..
