The ships of the Commonwealth and Dominion Line/Port Line were to pay a heavy price for the ir participation in the British War effort in both world wars. No fewer than twenty vessels were lost during the two conflicts.

The SS  Port Denison   was a Cargo Vessel built 1918 for the Commonwealth & Dominion Line and was torpedoed and sunk by enemy action on September 26, 1940.

S.S. PORT WELLINGTON was built in 1924 by Workman, Clark & Co. at Belfast with a tonnage of 7868grt, a length of 470ft 1in, a beam of 60ft 5in and a service speed of 14 knots. She was damaged in 1937 when she was moored adjacent to the Government Cool Stores in Melbourne when it caught fire. On 30th November 1940 she was captured by the German surface raider Pinguin and sunk on the following day after the Germans had removed stores to enable the Pinguin to leave the Indian Ocean. The German ship then sailed for the Antarctic where she captured the Norwegian whaling fleet.

M.V. Port Dunedin  was a cargo ship completed in 1925 and broken up in 1962, giving her a service life of 37 years.

The M.V. Port Huon was built for the Commonwealth & Dominion Line Ltd, London (later the Port Line) by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson, Wallsend, Newcastle during 1927. The ship was one of several built to replace those lost during World War One. The Port Huon was the third vessel to be completed in this replacement programme, following the Dunedin and Port Freemantle (a sister ship to the Port Huon).
