1915 Eli Griffiths Brass Wardroom/Bulkhead Ships Lamp With Oil Burner.
This is the sale of 1 of 2 of my beautiful wardroom bulkhead ships lamps.
This particular ships lamp is from 1915 and was made by the renowned Midlands lamp manufacturer Eli Griffiths & Sons.
As you will make out from the lifting tab on the chimney cowl it is stamped EG&S 1915.
The lamp is 3 sided glass and has a rear mounting bracket as well as a copper and brass carrying handle. Typically this lamp would be wall mounted in the wardroom to give light to the officers but then could be lifted down and carried by an officer to light his way around the ship. There is also a brass tab on the rear to presumably allow a chain to secure it to the wall during rough seas.
The lamp stands at 16-inches tall plus the handle which measures a further 4-inches. The overall width across the back is 8.5-inches.
There is an access point to adjusting the wick on the right hand side so the full door doesn't have to be opened during storms or windy conditions.
All the glass is intact and the brass bodywork is in beautiful condition. The only slight blemish is revealed when you open the side door to access the burner. As you will see from the photograph, one of the glass retaining bars has become detached. It is easily repairable with a small solder tack and it makes absolutely no difference when the door is closed.
The brass burner slides out beautifully from the right hand side and is in gorgeous condition.
It isn't the original burner but is still 56 years old and made by the esteemed British burner maker Alderson & Glyde Ltd Birmingham. It has the company stamp on the side and is dated 1956
This lamp epitomizes fine English tradition and marine craftsmanship. This is an extraordinary and rare item and is in excellent condition. As you will see from the photos, the brass is in beautiful condition and is held together with with copper rivets. The top opens up allowing access to the chimney. The details on this lantern are incredible, it is in great working condition, and it's almost 100 years old !
It really is a wonderful example of English workmanship weighing a little over 11 lbs.(5kgs)
This would make a fantastic addition to anybody's marine collection.
