A magnificent and rare, 1935, William Moorcroft, flambé, naturally ribbed, pattered kidney shaped vase, of tapered sleeve form, with a stunning red mottled flambé  glaze.  This is what William Moorcroft called his natural pottery, quite nice to find a piece of natural pottery, with the flambé  glaze.

This vase is in wonderful condition: no chips, dinks, scratches, restoration or damage and very little crazing. It does have a tiny manufacturing pin head mark under the glaze, (created by a tiny air bubble bursting in kiln firing) as shown in photo 3, but nothing unusual. Just a very nice piece of William Moorcroft flambé pottery, considering this magnificent Moorcroft vase is 79 years old, it's in very good commensurate condition.

The inside colour of this flambé vase is a beautiful dark red brown and turquoise On the bottom are the impressed blue and green flash markings for 'William Moorcroft', 'Made in England' and 'Potter to H.M Queen'.

This William Moorcroft vase dates from 1935 because in 1928 following the awarding of the Royal  Warrant, William Moorcroft started to use an impressed stamp with a facsimile signature together with the words "Potter to HM The Queen". In 1936 the wording changed to "Potter to HM Queen Mary" following the death of King George V.

The flambé technique was first introduced in about 1919, Walter Moorcroft commented "he never discovered how or from what source his father acquired the technique of producing flambe". In 1970 flambe  production came to an end due to the change from coal gas to natural gas and subsequent loss of vital chemical atmosphere also the governments 'clean air act' was being implemented.

In 1971 the Moorcroft flambé kilns were taken down, the twin kilns were some of the last kilns on a potbank. This basically means Moorcroft's 'flambe' will never be reproduced, which is why William Moorcroft flambé  pieces have become so very collectable.

As you can see from my pictures, this vase seems to colour shift depending on room lighting conditions, which is quite striking, it looks different at certain times of the day. It's one of those vases that you never seem to get fed up of looking at, a real fantastic design concept (very flambé  clever).

Height: 5 inches or 12.5 cm

Diameter: 5 inches or 12.5 cm (top)

Diameter: 3.25 inches or 8.2 cm (base)

A stunning vase that has become so very desirable/collectable and is only going to appreciate in value, since being illustrated in Paul Atterbury's Moorcroft Book, page 153.

This highly sought-after flambe vase would make a superb gift and solid future investment, a nice solid honest piece of Moorcroft pottery.
