Nice collection of original WW1 and WW2 cap badges, collected up to the late 1950s, before the collector joined up on National Service.

I bought this group, solely to obtain one rare Ulster badge and two other scarce cap badges and these are the surplus. I’ve researched as best as I can and believe all to be correct. Please satisfy yourself and ask for any further pics or descriptions.

Collection comprises the following:

1. Very scarce, King’s crown, brass cap badge with copper lugs to the reverse worn only from 1920-1929. The "RAPC" monogram in script style surmounted by the Royal Crest. I’ve only seen references to this pattern with slider or with blades, however there is an old repair to the fixing point where a slider would have been, and it appears the lugs may have been added. Polished to high points and repairs, as mentioned.

2. Lovely, WW2 Reconnaissance Corps cap badge in stamped brass with fine, copper lugs. Superb condition with good detail.

3. Original, Victorian, NCO’s arm badge for the Staffordshire Yeomanry, correctly cast in white metal with fine copper lugs, north and south. Lower lug is missing. Otherwise good condition with fine detailing.

4. Original, WW2, cast white metal cap badge to the War-raised 22nd Dragoons with elongated, thin slider to the reverse and correct fretting to the XXII and a clear void between the base of the D and the scroll. Excellent condition.

5. WW1 pattern, bi-metal cap badge in white metal with applied brass acorn and oak leaves to the Cheshire Regiment. Nice detail with folded brass slider to reverse. Slider has been bent, otherwise good condition.

6. Original, First Pattern, WW1, bi-metal cap badge for The King’s Liverpool Regiment. Stamped white metal horse of Hannover with applied brass scroll work ‘The Kings’. Folded, elongated brass slider to reverse. As referenced in John Gaylor ‘Collecting Military Badges’ Page 26, Plate 10 2-C.

7. WW1, cast white metal cap badge to the Rochester Volunteer Training Corps with fine copper mugs, east and west, to reverse. Good overall condition with fine detailing. Pooling of white metal to the reverse, as seen on verified originals of this cap badge.

8. Original, late WW2, stamped cap badge in white metal to the 6th Battalion, Hampshire Regiment (Duke of Connaught’s Own) with gilded brass slider to the reverse, which is clearly marked ‘J R GAUNT B’HAM’. Produced by both Gaunt and Firmin from 1947 this pattern was worn when the Battalion became 383 (Anti-Tank Regiment), Royal Artillery as part of the Territorial Army. As referenced Kipling & King 1729, Volume 2.

9. Original, WW1 ‘Flag Left’ economy version cap badge to the famous Irish Regiment, the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. Stamped brass with folded brass slider to the reverse.

10. WW1, pressed brass with fine copper lugs, Tank Corps proficiency badge, designed by Colonel Ernest Swinton in 1916 and worn by qualified tank crew on their arm from summer, 1917. I’m no expert on badges but have compared this to other, ‘genuine’ ones from badge forums and all the details, size and lug positions seem to be correct.

11. Di-stamped, white metal cap badge to the Honourable Artillery Company with brass folded slider to reverse, marked ‘J R GAUNT B’HAM’. Believed post-1954.

12. Rare, WW1 pressed brass cap badge to the 25th (Frontiersmen) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. Long, folded slider to the reverse, marked “STARR” over “PUTNEY SW”. Again, compared to images on various forums and a reference on the GMIC and believe this to be correct.

13. WW1, blackened brass cap badge for the 7th (Ardwick) Battalion, Manchester Regiment, Territorial Force. This scarce badge has the original ‘extruded’ slider to the reverse, as per Kipling & King, reference 1746. This pattern was worn between 1908 and 1921. Confident this is 100% correct.

14. As per vickerssmg blog, an original, bronze, WW1 officer’s cap badge to the Canadian Machine Gun Corps. Beautifully cast with the inverted tablet for “JR GAUNT LONDON” to the reverse - as pictured on the Vickers SMG Blog about the Canadian Machine Gun Corps. Superb condition.

15. Rare, pressed brass cap badge of the British 1st Armoured Motor Battery with fine copper lugs to the reverse. Circa 1915, this one is identical to another being sold by Relic Militaria whose provenance was impeccable as it was part of the Mazeas collection. Superb condition with only minor wear to high points.

A great opportunity for any dealer or collector.

Happy bidding.
