Here we have an absolutely stunning sugar bowl with lid decorated with a marbled agate glaze and beautifully formed flowers. The brown, black, yellow and cream agate decoration is applied to the outside, inside and bottom of the sugar bowl and lid. Molded separately and applied prior to firing are very artistic and finely detailed flowers with leaves. These form the handle on the top of the lid and are on either side of the handles on the side of the bowl. Measuring 4 ½” in width from handle to handle and 4” in height to the top of the lid, this survives in near mint condition. The body of the sugar dish has no damage or repairs. The center elevated flowers are in perfect condition, there are minor petal losses on 2 of the flowers on the side of the lid that don’t detract. A cup and saucer with the same agate decoration is shown and described in Jonathan Rickard’s definitive book “MOCHA and related dipped wares, 1770-1939” on page 124. The underside of the lid and sugar bowl are hand inscribed with the pottery name “APT”. These marbled agate sugar bowls are extremely rare and any advanced collector would be pleased to add this to their collection.
