This antique pepper pot or shaker measures approximately 1 3/4 inches or 45 mm across the widest part of its lower body and it stands just under 3 3/4 inches or 94 mm tall to the top of its finial.
The pepper pot or shaker is made from solid sterling silver in a baluster shape with a dome shape pierced push fitting lid that has a decorative finial on the top and it stands on a raised circular foot, the pepper pot or shaker has been delightfully embossed or raised relief decorated with scrolls and foliage among bulbous circular and oval shaped panels and it Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram all as photographed below, the upper body along with the rim of the lid have been impressed with English solid sterling silver hallmarks that read as follows,
J.M.B - Lion Passant - Three Wheat Sheaves - stylized A
J.M.B is the Birmingham silversmith or makers mark of John Milward Banks, the Lion Passant is the mark of English solid sterling silver, the Three Wheat Sheaves is the mark of the Chester assay office and the stylized letter A is the date letter for 1901.
Part of the rarity of this pepper pot is in the fact that it has been impressed with a Chester hallmark, the Chester assay office was closed in August 1962 and pieces that bear this mark have become harder to find as well as far more desirable to the serious collector.
The condition is used and Excellent for its age.
The Pepper Pot or Shaker has No Large Dents, No Splits, No Cracks, No Holes and No Repairs that I can find, the pepper pot stands straight, the definition and decoration is crisp, the lid opens with ease and closes tightly shut, the silver hallmark is partially rubbed but still legible although as this pepper pot is a used antique it does have some small shallow dents in the sides of its lid along with some extremely minor surface wear from use, it has the patina of age that is to be expected and a gentle clean would enhance it greatly. Personally I think that this antique pepper pot or shaker can still be used today and that it would make a superb addition to any collection, I also think that it looks fantastic considering that it's over 110 years old.
This Superb Quality Late Victorian Chester Hallmarked Sterling Silver Relief Decorated Pepper Pot or Shaker dated 1901 is one of several pieces of antique silver that I have also listed.
