Under Pressure
A barometer is an instrument which is used to measure changes in air pressure. These changes are then used to predict the weather. There are three main type: Water, Mercury & Aneroid. This is an Aneroid Barometer. This type of barometer has a small, evacuated cell at its heart. As the air pressure changes, the cell expands or contracts. The overlaying mechanism, attached to a pointer, amplifies these small changes causing the pointer to move.
This is a great-looking, solid, antique, wood barometer. The maker is unknown but it is marked "British Made" at the bottom.
It has a heavy, solid mahogany base which is in very good condition. It measures approximately 28cm x 6cm (9" x 21/2"). The wood has been polished to give it a nice sheen.
In the centre is one, large, round, 16.5cm (61/2") display. The glass has no chips and it has been removed and cleaned, front & back. It provides a nice, clear view of the barometer's face. The face is silver coloured. The markings are still very black and the pressure readings are provided in inches complete with large, black fonts. Rain and Fair are uppercase, the remaining lettering is capitalised.
It has a nicely styled pointer with a thin arrow-like tip and quarter-moon end. There is a second, movable pointer which allows you to easily monitor the changes in the air pressure. This is finished in bright red.
The face is encompassed with a metal bezel. The chrome is in excellent order with a good shine.
There is a large, sturdy, metal hook around the back for ease of hanging.
