A pair of very decorative Continental repoussé brass altar sticks in the 17th
century style, the broad drip pans beneath the spikes each with crimped
rim, the stems with knopped and scrolling foliate mouldings overall,
each composed of separate elements, above knopped triform socles
and conforming triform bases modelled with further stylised foliage
above three stepped bracket feet.
Measurements:
Height: 83 cm, Width: 20 cm
With the proliferation of new churches during the 19th century
came a need for implements and furnishings that would be befitting to
the styles of the churches that were being built. These altar sticks are
of that period and were almost certainly designed for ecclesiastical
use. That said they have a look which is currently fashionable and they
sell well at auction.
These are in a good condition for their age, with some wax residue on the bases, which would clean off. They are totally unrestored.
