Item:116060538599Antique 18thC Naples Real Fabbrica Ferdinandea Commedia Ceramic Figure Figurine. For sale is a
very rare large figurine called "The Fainting" supposedly of the
Commedia dell'arte characters in street clothing made by Naples ( Real
Fabbrica Ferdinandea ) around 1775.
Looks more like a scene from Hogarth to me :) The Capodimonte factory
existed near Naples from 1743 until 1759 when it was moved to Buen
Retiro. The Naples factory was founded by Ferdinand IV in 1771 and made
mostly softpaste at first and later went to soft and hard paste
porcelain and looked similar to Capodimonte porcelain. It was around
until 1806 when the French occupied it and after that the molds, etc.
were sold all over the place. The figurine is made of a superb softpaste
and consists of 5 figurines and a sheep on top of a large rock
formation type base. There is the fainting lady in the center being held
up by one of the gentlemen, another gentleman poses a bit like
Napoleon, a boy sits in the front holding the sheep and another lady is
on the right side looking at the two figures in the center. The figurine
is in good condition for the size and age but obviously not perfect.
The base was broken (I think) and repaired at some point and it is hard
to see what exactly was damaged. There is flaking to the paint, whatever
the gentleman on the left side was holding in his right hand is broken
off, one of the sheep's ears is restored, the neck of the lady on the
right side was broken, the right leg of the gentleman in the back center
is redone and there are some small chips to bows, flowers, etc. but
nothing major. It sounds worse than it looks and the figurine is
absolutely stunning! It is unmarked except an area I thought might be
incised writing but I cannot make anything out. The entire piece is
about 10 inches tall, 8 inches wide and 8 inches deep. This piece is
also pictured in the Real Fabbrica Ferdinandea book and I added three
pics of that. Napoli Italy Italian 18th century dell arte Italian comedy Porzellan Figur Neapel
