Here we have a wonderful elegant, quality grandfather clock by Coats of Wigan and dates from the Georgian period. The case is made from solid oak which has a lovely rich patina which can only be gained through age. The case is original to the dial and movement.
If we start with the hood it retains the rare and impressive feature of an original caddy top, giving the clock style and refinement, typical of the Georgian period. Below this there are nice carved detailing. The hood door has lovely cushion moulding and is flanked by full turned columns. To the rear are pretty shaped back splats.
Going down the full length trunk door is nicely shaped to the top and flanked by quarter turner columns. The door is complete with it's lock and key which has a lovely shaped brass escutcheon. The clock is then raised on ogee bracket feet.
The dial is particularly handsome with maiden head spandrels to the four corners and the silvered chapter ring is set out with Roman numerals with Arabic numerals above. It is signed at the bottom of the chapter ring 'Coats Wigan'. There is a subsidiary second date and date aperture and is finished with a lovely set of shaped hands.
The clock keeps good and strikes on the hour, although is not sold with any guarantees as it will need transporting and setting up correctly. The clock is complete with weights and pendulum.
There are several Coats of Wigan listed in 'Lancashire Clocks and Clockmakers by BRIAN LOOMES' but as this one dates to circa 1760 it will be by Archibald (I) rather than the sons: 'Coats, Archibald (I). Wigan. Clock and watchmaker of repute. Working by 1759. Two watches and clocks in Wigan museum. Made both brass and painted dial clocks. Often signed simply 'Coats Wigan''
The approximate MAXIMUM dimensions are : 87 1/2 inches / 222.5 cm high, 22 1/2 inches / 57 cm wide across hood, 14 3/4 inches / 37.5 cm wide across trunk, 22 inches / 56 cm wide across base , 11 inches / 28 cm deep.
CONDITION: The clock is in lovely condition as can be seen from the photographs. The only issue to point out is that the return moulding to the top of the hood on the left side is lacking which can be seen in the photographs of the side of the hood. The clock keeps good and strikes on the hour, although is not sold with any guarantees as it will need transporting and setting up correctly. The clock is complete with weights and pendulum . Please study photographs carefully as they form part of the description and condition, as what you view is exactly what you will receive.
